Translation · EN

to Maymuna from charity. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: "Why did you not make use of its hide?" They said: "It is a carcass." He said: "Only eating it is prohibited." In another wording: "If only they had taken its hide and tanned it, then benefited from it." (Agreed upon). And because it only becomes impure due to the contact of blood and fluids with it upon death, and tanning removes that, thus the hide reverts to what it was during its lifetime.

Our evidence is what Abdullah ibn Ukaym narrated, that the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, wrote to Juhayna: "I had granted you a concession regarding the hides of the carcass, so when this letter of mine reaches you, do not benefit from a carcass in terms of hide or sinew."
