Terms of Use

Last updated: 2026-07-10

This is a convenience translation; the German version of these Terms is legally binding.

1. Scope

These terms govern the use of ShamelaTranslate. By using the site you agree to them.

2. The service

We provide a largely open-access library of classical Arabic texts with translations. There is no claim to permanent availability. Translations are prepared with care but may contain errors and are not a substitute for religious, legal or professional advice.

3. Accounts

Some features require an account (sign-in via Google). You are responsible for activity under your account.

4. Acceptable use

The following are prohibited:

  • automated mass retrieval (scraping) that impairs operation,
  • circumventing security or access restrictions,
  • unlawful use or infringement of third-party rights.

5. Content & rights

The Arabic source texts are in the public domain. The translations we create and the site design are protected by copyright and are the property of ShamelaTranslate; use beyond private, non-commercial reading — in particular publishing, redistributing, or using them outside this site — requires our consent. Exempted are short private quotations, provided they do not harm (potential) subscribers or this project.

6. Liability

We are liable without limitation for intent and gross negligence, under product-liability law, and for injury to life, body or health. Otherwise we are liable only for breach of essential contractual duties, limited to foreseeable, typical damage.

7. Changes & governing law

We may amend these terms with future effect. German law applies; mandatory consumer-protection provisions remain unaffected.

8. Paid subscriptions (Premium)

For a monthly fee, the Premium subscription offers ad-free reading and access to books marked "Premium". The total price is shown before you subscribe; as a small business under § 19 of the German VAT Act (Kleinunternehmer) we do not charge VAT.

Billing is monthly in advance via our payment provider. The subscription renews automatically for one further month at a time until you cancel.

If a due payment fails (e.g. an expired card or insufficient funds), the subscription's benefits (ad-free reading, access to Premium books) are suspended temporarily until payment succeeds. Our payment provider automatically retries the payment several times; in the meantime you can update your payment method at any time via "Manage subscription", and benefits resume automatically once payment succeeds. If all attempts fail, the subscription is canceled automatically with no further costs. We do not charge any additional late-payment interest or reminder fees.

You can cancel at any time with effect from the end of the current billing period — in your account or via the cancellation button ("Cancel now"). Fees already paid are not refunded on a pro-rata basis.

As a consumer you generally have a 14-day right of withdrawal; details and the model withdrawal form are in the Withdrawal Instructions. If you expressly request that performance begin immediately and confirm that your right of withdrawal expires upon full performance of the contract, it expires accordingly.
