with his chain of narration from Uthman (109) ibn Abd Allah ibn Mawhab, who said: I entered upon Umm Salamah, and she brought out for us (110) a hair from the hair of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) dyed with henna and katam. (111) Abu Bakr also dyed his hair with henna and katam.
There is no harm in using wars (saffron-like plant) and saffron, because Abu Malik al-Ashja'i said: 'Our dye with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) was wars (112) and saffron.' (113) And from al-Hakam ibn 'Amr al-Ghifari, who said: 'My brother Rafi' and I entered upon the Commander of the Faithful, Umar, while I was dyed with henna, and my brother was dyed with yellow. Umar ibn al-Khattab said: "This is the dye of Islam," and he said to my brother Rafi': "This is the dye of faith."
It is disliked (makruh) to dye hair with black. It was said to Abu Abd Allah: "Do you dislike dyeing with black?" He said: "Yes, by Allah." He said: "Abu Bakr brought his father to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), and his head and beard were as white as the thaghamah (114) plant. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: 'Change these two, but avoid black.'" (115) And Abu Dawud narrated with his chain of narration from Abd Allah ibn Abbas [who said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said] (116): "There will be a people in the end times who will dye with black like the crops (117) of pigeons."
