Section: It is recommended to increase the amount of water used for the face because it has folds, hairs, interiors, and exteriors, so that the water may reach all of it. Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated in the description of the wudu of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, saying: Then he inserted his hands into the vessel together, took a handful of water with them, and splashed it upon his face, then the second time, then the third time similarly, then he took with his right palm a handful of water and let it flow over his face. Narrated by Abu Dawud (30). His statement "tastan" means (31): it flows and pours down. Ahmad, may Allah have mercy on him, said: More water is taken for the face than is taken for any other limb. Muhammad ibn al-Hakam (32) said: Abu 'Abd Allah disliked that one should take the water, pour it, and then wash his face, and he said: This is wiping, but he should wash it by washing. Abu Dawud narrated from Anas that when the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, performed wudu, he would take a palmful of water and insert it under his chin, saying: "Thus my Lord, Mighty and Majestic, commanded me (33)."

26- Issue: He said: (The mouth and the nose are of the face).

This means that rinsing the mouth (madmada) and inhaling water (istinshaq) are obligatory in both purifications: ghusl and wudu, for washing the face is obligatory in both. This is the well-known view in the school, and it was held by Ibn al-Mubarak, Ibn Abi Layla, and Ishaq; it was also narrated from 'Ata'. Another view was reported from Ahmad [that only inhaling water is obligatory] (1). Al-Qadi said: Inhaling water is obligatory in both purifications, as a single report, and this was the view of Abu 'Ubayd, Abu Thawr, and Ibn al-Mundhir, because the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: "Whoever performs wudu, let him perform istinthar (blowing water out of the nose) (2)." And in a narration he said (3): "When one of you performs wudu..."
