Section: Rinsing the mouth (madmada) is the circulating of water in the mouth. Inhaling water (istinshaq) is the drawing of water into the interior of the nose through breathing. Blowing water out from the nose is known as istinthar. However, the term istinthar is often used to express istinshaq because it is one of its requirements. It is not obligatory to circulate the water throughout the entire mouth, nor to cause the water to reach the entire interior of the nose; rather, that is a recommended exaggeration (mubalagha) for someone who is not fasting, and we have already mentioned this in the Sunan of purification. If one circulates the water in their mouth, they have the choice between spitting it out or swallowing it, because the purpose has been achieved by it. If one puts water in their mouth intending to remove the minor ritual impurity (hadath asghar), and then remembers they are in a state of major ritual impurity (junub), and intends to remove both, both are lifted; because the ruling of 'used water' does not attach to water until after it separates (from the body). Even if the water remained in the mouth until enough saliva dissolved into it to change it, this does not prevent it (from being valid), because a change in the place of cleansing does not prevent its validity, similar to if the water on one's limb were changed by dough that is upon it.

Section: It is recommended that one rinses the mouth and inhales water with the right hand, then blows the water out (istinthar) with the left hand, according to what was narrated from Uthman, may Allah be pleased with him, that he performed wudu, called for water, washed his hands three times, then scooped with his right hand, raised it to his mouth, rinsed his mouth and inhaled with one handful, and blew out the water with his left hand, and he did that three times—then he mentioned the rest of the wudu—and then he said: 'The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, performed wudu for us just as I have performed it for you; so whoever is asking about the wudu of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, this is his wudu.' (17) Reported by Sa‘id ibn Mansur (18) with his chain of narration. And from ‘Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, that he placed his right hand into the vessel, filled his palm, rinsed his mouth, inhaled, and blew out with his left hand, and he did that three times, then said: 'This is the wudu of the Prophet of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.' Reported by Abu Bakr in 'al-Shafi', and by al-Nasa'i (19).
