It is recommended that one rinses the mouth and inhales water from a single handful, combining both actions. Al-Athram said: I heard Abu Abd Allah being asked: Which do you prefer; rinsing the mouth and inhaling from a single scoop, or each of them separately? He said: With a single scoop. This is due to what we have mentioned regarding the hadith of Uthman and Ali, may Allah be pleased with them both. In the hadith of Abdullah ibn Zayd (20), it is stated that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) put his hands into [the vessel and rinsed his mouth] (21) and blew out the water three times, rinsing his mouth and blowing out from a single scoop. Reported by Sa‘id. In another wording: He rinsed his mouth and blew out the water three times, each three times, from a single scoop. Reported by al-Bukhari. In another wording: He rinsed his mouth and inhaled from a single handful, doing that three times. Agreed upon.
