-may Allah bless him and grant him peace-: "I do not permit the mosque for a menstruating woman nor for a person in a state of major impurity." As for us, we have the words of Allah the Exalted: "...except those who are passing through," and an exception from a prohibition is a permission. Furthermore, it is narrated from ‘A’ishah that the Messenger of Allah -may Allah bless him and grant him peace- said to her: "Hand me the khumrah (small prayer mat) from the mosque." She said: "I am menstruating." He replied: "Your menstruation is not in your hand." Narrated by Muslim (10). It is also narrated from Jabir who said: "We used to pass through the mosque while we were in a state of major impurity." Narrated by Ibn al-Mundhir. And from Zayd ibn Aslam, he said: "The companions of the Messenger of Allah -may Allah bless him and grant him peace- used to walk in the mosque while they were in a state of major impurity." Narrated by Ibn al-Mundhir as well. This is an indication concerning all of them, thus it constitutes consensus (ijma‘).
Section: As for the woman in a state of chronic vaginal bleeding (mustahada) and the one suffering from urinary incontinence, they are permitted to remain in the mosque and pass through it if they are secure from polluting the mosque, based on what was narrated from ‘A’ishah that a woman from the wives of the Messenger of Allah -may Allah bless him and grant him peace- performed i‘tikaf (seclusion) with him while she was a mustahada, and she would see the redness and yellowness [of the blood], and she would sometimes place the basin under her while she was praying. Narrated by al-Bukhari (11). This is because it is a state of impurity that does not prevent prayer, so it does not prevent remaining in the mosque, just like the flow of a small amount of blood from one’s nose. If one fears polluting the mosque, then they may not pass through it, for the mosque is to be protected from this, just as it is protected from urination within it. If a menstruating woman fears polluting the mosque by passing through it, she is not permitted to do so.
Section: If a person in a state of major impurity fears for his person or his wealth, or if it is impossible for him to exit the mosque, or he cannot find a place other than it, or it is impossible for him to perform the full ablution (ghusl) or the partial ablution (wudu’), he shall perform tayammum (dry ablution), and then remain in the mosque. It has been narrated from ‘Ali, Ibn ‘Abbas, Sa‘id ibn Jubayr, Mujahid, and al-Hasan ibn Muslim ibn Yannaq (12) regarding the interpretation of the words of the Exalted: "...nor [as] those in a state of major impurity, except those who are passing through," meaning:
