and al-Tirmidhi, who said: A hasan sahih (good, authentic) hadith (3). It was narrated from Abu Musa al-Ash'ari, who said: A group of the Muhajirun and the Ansar differed regarding that. The Ansar said: Ghusl is not obligatory except from gushing water or from the water itself. The Muhajirun said: Rather, if he has intercourse, then ghusl has become obligatory. [He said, he said] (4) Abu Musa: So I shall clarify that for you. I stood up and asked permission to enter upon A'isha, and I said: O Mother, or O Mother of the Believers, I wish to ask you about something, and I am embarrassed to do so. She said: Do not be embarrassed to ask me about something you would ask your mother who bore you, for I am indeed your mother. I said: What necessitates ghusl? She said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah be pleased with him, said: "If he sits between her four limbs and the circumcised part touches the circumcised part, then ghusl has become obligatory." Muttafaq alayh (agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim) (5). In a hadith from Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, he said: Whoever disagrees with that, I will make him an example for others (6). Abu Hurayra narrated that the Prophet, may Allah be pleased with him, said: "If he sits between her four limbs, and exerts himself, then ghusl has become obligatory upon him." Muttafaq alayh (7). Muslim added: "Even if he does not ejaculate."
