from Janaba; and a mudd is sufficient for wudu. Narrated by Muslim (3). It is narrated that a group asked Jabir about ghusl, and he said: A sa' suffices you. A man said: It does not suffice me. Jabir said: It used to suffice someone who had more (4) hair than you, and who was better than you—meaning the Prophet (peace be upon him). Agreed upon (5). There are many authentic reports concerning this. The sa' is five and a third Iraqi ratls, and the mudd is one-fourth of that, which is one and a third ratls. This is the opinion of Malik, al-Shafi'i, Ishaq, Abu 'Ubayd, and Abu Yusuf. Abu Hanifah said: The sa' is eight ratls, because Anas ibn Malik said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to perform wudu with a mudd—which is two ratls—and perform ghusl with a sa' (6). Our evidence is what was narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said to Ka'b ibn 'Ujrah: "Feed six poor persons a faraq of food." Agreed upon (7).
