finds it after the time has expired, he is not required to repeat it by consensus. Abu Bakr ibn al-Mundhir said: The scholars have reached a consensus that whoever performs Tayammum and prays, then finds water after the time for the prayer has expired, is not required to repeat it. If he finds it within the time, he is also not required to repeat it, regardless of whether he had despaired of finding water during the time or deemed it likely that he would find it. This is the opinion of Abu Salamah, al-Sha'bi, al-Nakha'i, al-Thawri, Malik, al-Shafi'i, Ishaq, Ibn al-Mundhir, and the scholars of opinion. Ata', Tawus, al-Qasim ibn Muhammad, Makhul, Ibn Sirin, al-Zuhri, and Rabi'ah said: He must repeat the prayer. Our evidence is what Abu Dawud narrated from Abu Sa'id, that two men went out on a journey and the time for prayer arrived, and they had no water with them. They performed Tayammum on pure soil and prayed, then they found water within the time. One of them repeated his ablution and prayer, while the other did not. Then they came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and mentioned that to him. He said to the one who did not repeat: "You have followed the Sunnah, and your prayer has sufficed you." And he said to the one who repeated: "You have a double reward." Ahmad argued that Ibn Umar performed Tayammum while he could see the houses of Medina, prayed the Asr prayer, and then entered Medina while the sun was still high, and he did not repeat it. Furthermore, he fulfilled his obligatory duty as he was commanded, so he is not required to repeat it, just as if he had found it after the time. Also, the lack of water is a customary excuse; thus, when he performs Tayammum alongside it, it should discharge the obligation of the prayer, like illness. Furthermore, since he has discharged the obligation of the prayer, it does not return to his liability, just as if he had found it after the time.

67 - Issue; He said: (And Tayammum is a single strike)

The established practice (Sunnah) according to Ahmad is that Tayammum consists of a single strike. If one performs Tayammum with two strikes, it is permissible. The Qadi said: Validity is achieved with one strike, while perfection is achieved with two. The explicitly stated view is what we have mentioned.
