Ibn Abi Sulayman: There is no harm in performing Tayammum with marble; due to what Al-Bukhari narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: "The earth has been made for me a place of prayer and a purifying agent (4)." And from Abu Hurayrah, that a man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, we are in the sand, and we become in a state of major ritual impurity (janabah), and menstruation (hayd), and postpartum bleeding (nifas), and we do not find water for four or five months. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You must use the earth (5)." And because it (6) is of the genus of the earth, so Tayammum with it is permissible, like dust. As for us, the verse (is the evidence); for Allah, the Almighty, commanded Tayammum with the Sa'id, which is dust, saying: {So wipe your faces and hands with it}, and the wiping is not achieved with anything from it unless it is dusty, such that it clings to the hand. It was narrated from Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have been given that which no prophet from the prophets of Allah was given: dust has been made for me a purifying agent." And he mentioned the hadith, narrated by Al-Shafi'i in his "Musnad" (7). If anything other than dust were a purifying agent, he would have mentioned it among those things that Allah, the Almighty, bestowed upon him as a favor. Hudhayfah also narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The earth has been made for me a place of prayer, and its dust a purifying agent (8)." So he specified its dust as being a purifying agent. Furthermore, purification has been restricted to the most common of liquids in existence, which is water, so it must (likewise) be restricted to the most common of solids in existence, which is dust. As for the report of Abu Dharr, we interpret it in light of our hadith, and the report of Abu Hurayrah is narrated by Al-Muthanna ibn al-Sabbah (9), and he is weak.

Section: From Ahmad, may Allah have mercy on him, there is another narration regarding salty ground (sabakhah) and sand: that it is permissible

Notes

(4) Previously mentioned on page 13. (5) Narrated by Al-Bayhaqi in the chapter "What was narrated regarding the menstruating woman and the woman in postpartum: Does Tayammum suffice them, etc." from the Book of Purification, Al-Sunan al-Kubra 1/216, 217. And Imam Ahmad, in his Musnad, see: Al-Fath al-Rabbani 2/189, 190. And it was narrated: "You must use dust." (6) In M: "And that it". (7) We did not find it in the Musnad of Imam Al-Shafi'i, printed in the marginalia of the sixth volume of Al-Umm, nor in the arrangement of the Musnad of Al-Shafi'i by Al-Sindi. It is in the Musnad of Imam Ahmad 1/98, 158. See what was previously mentioned on page 13. (8) The hadith of Hudhayfah was narrated by Muslim in the chapter "Places of Prayer" from the Book of Mosques. Sahih Muslim 1/371. (9) Abu Abdullah Al-Muthanna ibn al-Sabbah al-Yamani al-Abnawi al-Makki, his hadith is incoherent and he is weak; he died in the year 149 AH. Tahdhib al-Tahdhib 10/35-37.
