and parts of his hands. To us, the Almighty's saying, "Then wipe your faces and your hands with it," [and the 'ba' (letter 'b' in bi-wujuhikum) is additional, so it is as if He said: "Then wipe your faces and your hands with it"], means that it is mandatory to cover them entirely, just as it is mandatory to cover them entirely during washing; due to His saying, "And wash your faces and your hands to the elbows." Thus, he strikes once, and wipes his face with the inner parts of his fingers, and the backs of his hands up to the wrists with the inner parts of his palms. It is recommended to wipe one palm with the other and to interlace between the fingers, though it is not mandatory, because the obligation of the palms has been fulfilled by passing each one over the back of the hand. Ibn Aqil said: I see that tayammum with a single strike has omitted an order that was required in wudu, which is that he counts the wiping of the inner parts of his hands before the wiping of his face. However he wipes [them] after encompassing the area of obligation, it suffices him, whether it was with one strike, two strikes, three, or more.

Section: If he performs tayammum with two strikes for the face and the hands up to the elbows, he wipes his face with the first, and he wipes his hands with the second. He places the inner parts of the fingers of his left hand on the backs of the fingers of his right hand and passes them over the back of the hand. When he reaches the wrist, he grips the tips of his fingers on the edge of the forearm and passes them to his elbow. Then he turns the inner part of his palm to the inner part of the forearm and passes it over it, raising his thumb. When he reaches the wrist, he passes the thumb over the back of his right thumb. He wipes his left hand with his right hand in the same manner, wipes one palm with the other, and interlaces their fingers. Even if he wipes up to the elbows with a single strike, or three, or more, it is permissible, because he has wiped the place of tayammum with the dust, so it is permitted, just as if he had wiped it with two strikes.

Section: If any part of the area of obligation remains which the dust did not reach, he passes his hand over it, as long as he does not separate his palm [if he separates his palm] and there is still dust left on it, it is permissible to wipe with it. If there is no dust left on it, he needs another strike. If the portion left is on the face, he wipes it and repeats the wiping of his hands to achieve the order. And if a long interval passes between them, and we say
