Translation · EN

And while you are able to use water. So he performed ghusl and died. When we arrived at the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), he was informed of this, and he said: "They killed him, may Allah kill them! Why did they not ask when they did not know? For indeed the cure for inability is asking. It would have sufficed him to perform tayammum, wrap a cloth over his wound, wipe over it, and then wash the rest of his body." Recorded by Abu Dawud, and a similar report is narrated from Ibn Abbas. This is because every part of the body must be purified by something when the entire body is in a state of illness or health. Thus, it is mandatory for it even if other parts differ, just as if it were among the majority [of the body], for its ruling is not invalidated by a quality in another part. What they have cited is invalidated by the [practice of] wiping over the leather socks (khuffayn) while washing the remainder of the limbs of wudu. It differs from the [case] they used as an analogy, for that involves combining the substitute and the original in one location, unlike this case; for the tayammum is a substitute for what the water does not reach, not for what it does reach.

Section: What cannot be washed from the healthy parts except by the water spreading to the wounded part takes the ruling of the wound. If he is unable to control it, and he is able to appoint someone else to control it, he is obligated to do so. If he is unable to do that, he shall perform tayammum and pray, and it shall suffice him; because he is unable to wash it, thus the tayammum suffices him in its stead, like the wounded person.

Section: If the wounded person is junub (in a state of major ritual impurity), he has a choice: if he wishes, he may perform the tayammum before the ghusl, or if he wishes, he may delay it, unlike the case where the tayammum is due to the lack of sufficient water for all of his limbs, for there he is obligated to use the water first; because the tayammum is for the lack [of water], which is not realized except after the water is exhausted.
