that which is suspended, as evidenced by the hadith of 'Aisha.
Section: If the head of an image is severed, the dislike (karaha) is removed. Ibn 'Abbas said: "The image is the head; if the head is cut off, it is no longer an image" (25). This was also narrated from 'Ikrimah. It has been reported from Abu Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "Jibril came to me and said: 'I came to you last night, and nothing prevented me from entering except that there were statues at the door, there was a curtain in the house containing statues, and there was a dog in the house. So order the head of the statue that is at [the door of the house] (26) to be cut off, so it becomes like the shape of a tree (27); order the curtain to be cut into two cushions that are thrown and stepped upon; and order the dog to be taken out.'" The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) did so (28). If something is removed from it without which the animal cannot survive, such as its chest or stomach, or if a head is made for it that is separate from its body, it does not fall under the prohibition, because the image does not remain after its removal; thus, it is like severing the head. But if what is removed is something the animal can survive without, such as the eye, the hand, or the leg, then it is still an image and falls under the prohibition. Likewise, if it was initially created (29) as a body without a head, or a head without a body, or if it were given a head while the rest of its body is an image of something other than an animal, it does not fall under the prohibition, because that is not an image of an animal.
