is not used by itself except in a context where there is no harm, such as the statement of Allah Almighty: {Eat and drink in satisfaction for what you used to do} (36). And He said: {So consume it in satisfaction and ease} (37). Thus, it is not a metonym, just like his statement: 'Feed me.' It differs from: 'Taste' and 'Swallow,' for these are used for unpleasant things, as in the statement of Allah Almighty: {Taste! Indeed, you are the powerful, the noble} (38); {And taste the punishment of the Burning Fire} (39); and {Taste the touch of Saqar} (40). Likewise with 'swallowing,' Allah Almighty said: {He will gulp it and hardly be able to swallow it} (41). Therefore, it is not valid to equate with them what is not like them.
Section: If he said: 'I am divorced from you,' or he placed the affair of his wife in her hand, and she said: 'You are divorced,' his wife is not divorced. This was explicitly stated by him in a narration from al-Athram. This is the view of Ibn Abbas, al-Thawri, Abu Ubayd, the scholars of opinion (Ashab al-Ra'y), and Ibn al-Mundhir. This was also narrated from Uthman ibn Affan, may Allah be pleased with him. Malik and al-Shafi'i said: She is divorced if he intended divorce by it. Something similar was narrated from Umar, Ibn Mas'ud, Ata', al-Nakha'i, al-Qasim, and Ishaq; because divorce is the removal of the marriage bond, and it is shared between both of them, so if it is valid for one of them, it is valid for the other. There is no disagreement that divorce does not occur through it without intention. To us, it is a subject upon which divorce does not occur by adding it to him without intention, so it does not occur even if he intended it, like a stranger. Furthermore, if he were to say: 'I am divorced,' and did not say: 'from you,' it would not occur; if he were a subject for divorce, it would have occurred (42) by that, like the woman. Also, the man is an owner in the marriage, while the woman is owned, so the removal of ownership does not occur by attributing the removal to the owner, like manumission (itq). This (43) is indicated by the fact that a man is not described as being 'divorced' (mutallaq), unlike the woman. A man came to Ibn Abbas and said: 'I delegated the affair of my wife to her, and she divorced me'
