on behalf of my father, that he reported that the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) forbade it during the Farewell Pilgrimage. In one narration: "The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) forbade the mut'ah of women." Related by Abu Dawud. In a narration related by Ibn Majah, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "O people, I had permitted you to engage in mut'ah, but behold, Allah has forbidden it until the Day of Resurrection." It was narrated from 'Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) forbade the mut'ah of women on the day of Khaybar, as well as the flesh of domesticated donkeys. Related by Malik in "al-Muwatta'", and extracted by the Imams al-Nasa'i and others. Scholars of knowledge differed in reconciling these two reports. Some said: There is a transposition in the hadith of 'Ali, and its intent is that the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) forbade the flesh of domesticated donkeys on the day of Khaybar, and forbade the mut'ah of women—without mentioning the specific timing of its prohibition; this timing was clarified by al-Rabi' ibn Sabrah in his hadith, indicating it occurred during the Farewell Pilgrimage. This was narrated by Imam Ahmad from a group, and mentioned by Ibn 'Abd al-Barr. Al-Shafi'i said: "I do not know of anything that Allah permitted, then forbade, then permitted, then forbade, except for mut'ah." Thus, he took the matter according to its apparent meaning: that the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) forbade it on the day of Khaybar, then
