Abd Allah ibn Salam, from Khuwayla, that the Messenger of Allah - may Allah bless him and grant him peace - said to me: "Let him feed sixty poor persons a wasq of dates." In the narration of Abu Dawud: "The 'araq is sixty sa's" (11). Ibn Majah (12) narrated with his chain of transmission from Ibn Abbas, who said: The Messenger of Allah - may Allah bless him and grant him peace - expiated with a sa' of dates, and commanded the people: "Whoever does not find [that], then half a sa' of wheat." Al-Athram narrated with his chain of transmission from Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: Feed on my behalf a sa' of dates or barley, or half a sa' of wheat (13). This is because it is feeding for the poor, so it is a sa' of dates and barley, or half a sa' of wheat, like Sadaqat al-Fitr. This is a textual proof (nass). It indicates that it is a mudd of wheat, as it is the statement of Zayd, Ibn Abbas, Ibn Umar, and Abu Hurayrah, and we do not know of any dissenter among the Companions (16); thus, it constitutes a consensus (ijma'). [It also indicates] (17) that it is half a sa' of dates or barley (18), based on what Ata' ibn Yasar narrated, that the Messenger of Allah - may Allah bless him and grant him peace - said to Khuwayla (19), the wife of Aws ibn al-Samit: "Go to so-and-so the Ansari, for he has half a wasq of dates, and he informed me that he wishes to give it in charity, so take it, and let him give it in charity to sixty poor persons" (20). And in the hadith of Aws ibn al-Samit, that...
