The knowledge of this is well-established. As for the first hadith of Abu Hanifa, it is narrated (24) by al-Hajjaj [ibn Artah, and he is weak, and the one who narrates it from al-Hajjaj] (25) is also weak. The second hadith contains no evidence that there is no cutting for less than that; for one who makes cutting mandatory for three dirhams has made it mandatory for ten. This hadith indicates that items (of value) are appraised in dirhams, because the shield was appraised by them, and because whatever has gold as its foundation also has silver as its foundation, such as the thresholds for Zakat (27), blood money (diya), and the values of destroyed property. It has been narrated that Anas said: A thief stole a shield—which I would not be pleased to possess (28)—for three dirhams, or which was equal to three dirhams, and Abu Bakr ordered his hand to be cut (29). Uthman was brought a man who had stolen a citron (utrujja); Uthman ordered its value to be assessed, and it reached a quarter of a dinar, so Uthman ordered him to be cut (30).
