(may Allah bless him and grant him peace), that he forbade soaking unripe dates (busr) and fresh dates (rutab) together, and forbade soaking raisins and dates together. In one narration: "And soak each one separately." (12) From Abu Qatada, he said: The Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) forbade combining dates and zahw (13), and dates and raisins, and that each one of them should be soaked separately. Agreed upon (14). The Qadi said: Ahmad means by his saying: "It is forbidden," [that it applies] if it becomes strong and intoxicating, and if it does not intoxicate, it is not forbidden. This is the correct view, if Allah the Exalted wills. The Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) only forbade it (15) due to the reason of its speediness to cause forbidden intoxication; so if that is not found, the prohibition is not established, just as he, peace be upon him, forbade preparing nabidh in the mentioned vessels for this reason, then ordered them to drink from them as long as the reality of intoxication was not present. The correctness of this is indicated by what was narrated from Aisha, who said: "We used to prepare nabidh for the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), so we would take a handful of dates and a handful of raisins and put them in it, then we would pour water over it, and we would prepare it in the morning, and he would drink it in the evening, and we would prepare it in the evening, and he would drink it in the morning." Reported by Ibn Majah and Abu Dawud (16). Since the duration of the soaking was short, which is a day or a night (17), intoxication is not suspected.
