the infidels, so he may learn of their numbers and use them to strike fear (into the enemy). Ahmad said: If they are scattered, the spy will perceive their small number. He added: It reached me from al-Awza'i that he said regarding the mosques in the frontier: If I had authority over them, I would nail their doors shut—and he did not say: I would destroy them—so that their prayers might be in one place. For if the mobilization (nafir) comes and they are scattered, they are not like they would be if they were in one place.

Section: There is great merit in keeping guard in the path of Allah. Ibn Abbas said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: "Two eyes will not be touched by the Fire: an eye that wept from the fear of Allah, and an eye that spent the night guarding in the path of Allah." Recorded by al-Tirmidhi (41), who said: It is a hasan gharib (good but singular) hadith. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) also said: "May Allah have mercy on the guard of the garrison (42)." From Sahl ibn al-Hanzaliyyah, it is reported that they traveled with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) on the day of Hunayn, and they hastened their journey until it was evening. He said: "Who will guard us tonight?" Anas ibn Abi Marthad al-Ghanawi said: I will, O Messenger of Allah. He said: "Then mount." He rode his horse and came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), who said to him: "Go to this mountain pass until you are at its summit, and let us not be taken by surprise (43) from your direction tonight." When morning came, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to his place of prayer and performed two rak'ahs, then said: "Have you sensed your horseman (44)?" They said: No. Then the call for prayer was given, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) began to pray while glancing toward the mountain pass. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) finished his prayer and performed the taslim, he said: "Rejoice, for your horseman has come to you." He arrived and stood before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said: I set out until I was at the summit of this mountain pass, as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) commanded me. When morning came, I looked down both sides of the pass, but I saw no one. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to him: "Did you descend tonight?" He replied: No, except to pray or to answer the call of nature. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) then said to him: "You have earned it (Paradise/reward), so it will not harm you if you do not do any good deeds after this." الكفَّارِ، فيعْلمُ كثرَتَهم، فيُخَوِّفُ بهم. قال أحمد: إن كانُوا مُتَفَرِّقِين يرَى الجاسوسُ قِلَّتَهم. قال: وبلغَنِى عن الأَوْزاعِيّ، أنَّه قال في المساجِدِ التي بالثَّغْرِ: لو أنَّ لي عليها ولاية، لَسَمَّرْتُ أبوابَها - ولم يقُلْ: لخَرَّبْتُها - حتَّى تكونَ صلاتُهم في موضِعٍ واحدٍ، حتَّى إذا جاء النَّفِيرُ وهم مُتفرِّقُون، لم يكونُوا مثلَهم إذا كانوا في مَوْضعٍ واحدٍ.

فصل: وفي الحَرسِ في سبيلِ اللَّه فضلٌ كبيرٌ. قال ابن عباس: سمِعْتُ رسولَ اللَّه -صلى اللَّه عليه وسلم- يقول: "عَيْنَانِ لَا تَمَسَّهُمَا النَّارُ؛ عيْنٌ بَكَت مِنْ خَشْيَةِ اللهِ، وعَيْنٌ بَاتَتْ تَحْرُسُ في سَبِيلِ اللهِ". روَاه التِّرْمِذِيُّ (٤١)، وقال: حديثٌ حسَنٌ غريبٌ. وقال النبيُّ -صلى اللَّه عليه وسلم-: "رَحِمَ اللهُ حَارِسَ الْحَرَسِ" (٤٢). وعن سَهْلٍ بن الحَنْظَلِيَّةِ، أنَّهُم سارُوا مع رسولِ اللَّه -صلى اللَّه عليه وسلم- يومَ حُنَيْنٍ، فأَطنَبُوا السَّيْرَ حتَّى كان عشِيَّةً، قال: "مَنْ يَحْرُسُنَا اللَّيْلَةَ؟ " قال أَنَسُ بن أبي مَرْثَدٍ الغَنَوِيُّ: أنَا يا رسولَ اللَّه. قال: "فارْكَبْ". فرَكِبَ فرَسًا له، وجاءَ إلى رسولِ اللَّه -صلى اللَّه عليه وسلم-، فقال له: "اسْتَقْبِلْ هذَا الشِّعْبَ، حَتَّى تَكُونَ في أعْلَاهُ، ولَا نُغَرَّنَّ (٤٣) مِنْ قِبَلِكَ اللَّيْلَةَ". فلمَّا أصبْحْنَا، جاءَ رسولُ اللَّه -صلى اللَّه عليه وسلم- إلى مُصَلَّاهُ، فركَعَ ركعَتَيْن، ثم قال: "هَلْ أَحْسَسْتُمْ فَارِسَكُمْ (٤٤)؟ " قالوا: لا. فثُوِّبَ بالصلاةِ، فجعلَ رسولُ اللَّه -صلى اللَّه عليه وسلم- يُصَلِّي وهو يَلْتَفِتُ إلى الشِّعْبِ، حتَّى إذا قضَى رسولُ اللَّه -صلى اللَّه عليه وسلم- صلاتَه وسَلَّمَ، قال: "أَبْشِرُوا، قَدْ جَاءَكُمْ فَارِسُكُمْ". فإذا هو قد جاءَ حتَّى وقَفَ على رسولِ اللَّه -صلى اللَّه عليه وسلم-، فقال: إنِّي انْطَلَقْتُ حتى كنتُ في أعْلَى هذا الشِّعْبِ، حيثُ أمَرَنِى رسولُ اللَّه -صلى اللَّه عليه وسلم-، فلما أصبحتُ اطَّلَعْتُ الشِّعْبَيْنِ كِلَيْهمَا، فنظرْتُ، فلم أرَ أحدًا. فقال له رسولُ اللَّه -صلى اللَّه عليه وسلم-: "هَلْ نَزَلْتَ اللَّيْلَةَ؟ " قال: لا، إلَّا مُصَلِّيًا أو قاضِيًا حاجَةً. فقال له رسولُ اللَّه -صلى اللَّه عليه وسلم-: "قَدْ أَوْجَبْتَ، فَلَا عَلَيْكَ أنْ لا تَعْمَلَ بَعْدَهَا". روَاه أبو
