the first has won, and there is no need to shoot the tenth, because the most that can be expected is that he might hit with it, and that would not remove him from being already defeated. The second type is for them to say: 'Whichever of us surpasses his companion by one hit, two hits, or three hits out of twenty shots, he has won.' This is called 'mufadalah' (surpassing) and 'muhattah' (deduction), because the hits in which they are equal are deducted and not counted. It is necessary to complete the round of shots if there is a benefit in its completion. If they say: 'Whichever of us surpasses his companion by three hits is the winner,' and they shoot twelve shots, one of them hits all of them while the other misses them all, there is no requirement to complete the round, because the most that can be expected is that the other might hit the remaining eight and the first might miss them, and the first would not be removed from being the winner. But if the first had only hit ten out of the twelve, it is required that they both shoot the thirteenth. If they both hit it, both miss it, or the first hits it alone, then he has won, and there is no need to complete the round. If the other hits it and the first misses it, they must shoot the fourteenth; the ruling for it and for what follows is the same as the ruling for the thirteenth, meaning that whenever they hit it, both miss it, or the first hits it, he has won and they do not shoot what follows. But if the other hits it alone, they shoot what follows. Likewise, in every case where there is a benefit to one of them in completing the round, it is necessary to complete it; if there is no hope for benefit, it is not required to complete it. So, if there remains of the count [of shots] that which makes it possible for one of them to surpass his companion with it, or for one of them to nullify his companion's lead, completion is required, otherwise it is not. If the victory is achieved by three hits out of twenty, and they have shot eighteen, and they both miss them, both hit them, or they are equal in hits among them, completion is not required, because the most that can be expected is that one of them might hit these two shots while the other misses them, and victory is not achieved by that. Likewise, if one of them surpasses the other by five hits or more, completion is not required, because the other's hitting the two remaining arrows would not remove the [first] one from being in the lead by three hits. If he only leads by four, they shoot the last arrow; if the one who is behind hits it alone, they must shoot the final one [if applicable], and if the one behind also hits it, the first one's lead is nullified. If they both miss in one of the arrows, or the first hits in one of them, he is the winner.
