{Wherever you turn, there is the Countenance of Allah} (2). It was narrated by Ibn Majah and al-Tirmidhi (3), except that it is from the hadith of Ash'ath al-Samman, [and in it is weakness]. And from 'Ata', from Jabir, who said: We were with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, on a journey when clouds covered us, so we became confused and differed regarding the Qibla. Each man among us prayed separately, and one of us would draw a line in front of him so that we would know our positions. We mentioned that to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and he did not order us to repeat it, saying: "Your prayer has sufficed you" (5). It was narrated by al-Daraqutni (6), who said: It was narrated by Muhammad ibn Salim from 'Ata', and it is also narrated from Muhammad ibn [Ubayd Allah al-'Arzami] (7), from 'Ata'. Both of them are weak. Al-'Uqayli said: The matn (text) of this hadith is not narrated from a reliable chain (8). Muslim narrated in his "Sahih" (9) that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, used to pray towards Bayt al-Maqdis, then it was revealed: {We have certainly seen the turning of your face toward the heaven, and We will surely turn you to a Qibla with which you will be pleased, so turn your face toward al-Masjid al-Haram} (10). A man passed by the Banu Salama while they were bowing in the Fajr prayer, having already prayed one rak'ah, and he called out: Behold, the Qibla has been changed. So they all turned toward the Qibla. Such an event would not be hidden (11) from the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and he would not refrain from denouncing it unless it were permissible. What had passed of their prayer after the changing of the Qibla toward the Kaaba was correct. And because he performed what he was commanded,

In [M] there is an addition: "And he said: It is a hasan (good) hadith." This is not in al-Tirmidhi. (4) In Sunan al-Tirmidhi: "And Ash'ath ibn Sa'id Abu al-Rabi' al-Samman is considered weak in hadith." (5) In Sunan al-Daraqutni: "ajza'atkum" (has sufficed you).
