So I said: O Messenger of Allah, [may my father and mother be sacrificed for you] (14), what do you say during your silence (15) between the takbir and the recitation? He said: "I say: O Allah, distance me from my sins as You have distanced the east from the west. O Allah, purify me from my sins as a white garment is purified from filth. O Allah, wash away my sins with snow, water, and hail." This is agreed upon (16). Our evidence is what A'ishah narrated, saying: When the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) opened the prayer, he would say: "Glory be to You, O Allah, and with Your praise; blessed is Your name, exalted is Your majesty, and there is no deity other than You." It was recorded by Abu Dawud, Ibn Majah, and al-Tirmidhi (17). From Abu Sa'id, from the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), there is the like of it; it was recorded by al-Nasa'i and al-Tirmidhi (18).
