[...two silences: a silence when he says the takbir, and a silence when he finishes reciting {Not of those who have earned Your anger, nor of those who have gone astray}. Umran disagreed with him on this, so they both wrote about it to Ubayy ibn Ka'b. His letter to them stated that Samurah had indeed memorized correctly. Abu Salamah ibn 'Abd al-Rahman said: 'The imam has two silences; so take advantage of them by reciting the Opening of the Book (al-Fatihah), once when he enters into the prayer, and once when he says: Nor of those who have gone astray.' 'Urwah ibn al-Zubayr said: 'As for me, I take advantage of two moments from the imam: when he says {Not of those who have earned Your anger, nor of those who have gone astray}, I recite at that time; and when he concludes the surah, I recite before he bows.' This indicates that this practice was well-known among them. It was narrated by al-Athram.
152 - Issue: He said: (Then he recites a surah, beginning it with "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful").
We are not aware of any disagreement among the scholars that it is recommended to recite a surah along with the Fatihah in the first two rak'ahs of every prayer, and that one should recite it aloud in prayers where the Fatihah is recited aloud, and silently in those where it is recited silently. The basis for this is the action of the Prophet (peace be upon him); for Abu Qatadah narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to recite in the first two rak'ahs of the Zhuhr prayer the Opening of the Book and two surahs, lengthening the first and shortening the second, and he would sometimes make us hear an ayah. He also used to recite in the first two rak'ahs of the 'Asr prayer the Opening of the Book and two surahs, lengthening the first and shortening the second. He would lengthen the first rak'ah of the morning prayer and shorten the second. In one narration: In the Zhuhr, he used to recite in the last two rak'ahs with the Mother of the Book. Agreed upon (2). Abu Barzah narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to recite in the morning prayer between sixty and one hundred (verses). The recitation of the Prophet (peace be upon him) of a surah along with the Fatihah in prayers recited aloud has become famous and has been transmitted mutawatir (mass-transmitted). He also commanded Mu'adh to do so, saying: "Recite [the surahs] 'By the sun and its brightness', 'Glorify the name of your Lord the Most High', and 'By the night when it covers'." Agreed upon (5).
