his time —: It is a duty upon the Muslims to raise their hands for this hadith. And the hadith of Abu Humayd, which we mentioned at the beginning of the chapter (7), is like this (8). It was narrated by ten of the Companions, among them Abu Qatadah, so they affirmed it and said: This is how the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to pray. Besides these two, it was also narrated by Umar, Ali, Wa'il ibn Hujr, Malik ibn al-Huwayrith, Anas, Abu Hurayrah, Abu Usayd, Sahl ibn Sa'd, Muhammad ibn Maslamah, Abu Musa, and Jabir ibn Umayr al-Laythi, so it became like the mutawatir (9) to which no doubt attaches due to the multitude of its narrators and the authenticity of its chain of transmission. The Companions and the Tabi'un acted upon it and criticized those who did not act upon it. Al-Hasan said: I saw the Companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) raising their hands when they said the takbir, when they bowed, and when they raised their heads, like fans. Ahmad said, when asked about raising the hands (10): Yes, by my life! Who would doubt this! When Ibn Umar saw someone who did not raise [his hands], he would pelt him (11) and order him to raise them. As for their two hadiths, they are weak.

زمانِه -: حَقٌّ على المسلمين أنْ يَرْفَعُوا أيدِيَهم لهذا الحدِيثِ. وحديثُ أبِى حُمَيْدٍ، الَّذِى ذَكَرْنَا في أَوَّلِ البابِ (٧) هكذا (٨). وقد رَوَاهُ، في عشرَةٍ من الصحابَةِ، منهم أبو قتادَة، فصَدَّقُوهُ، وقالوا: هكذا كان يُصَلِّى رسولُ اللهِ -صلى اللَّه عليه وسلم-. ورَوَاهُ سِوَى هذيْنِ عمرُ، وعلِىٌّ، ووائِلُ بنُ حُجْرٍ، ومالكُ بن الحُوَيْرِث، وأنَسٌ، وأبو هُرَيْرَة، وأبو أَسِيد، وسَهْلُ بنُ سعدٍ، ومحمدُ بنُ مَسْلَمَة، وأبو موسى، وجابرُ بن عُمَيْر اللَّيْثِىُّ، فصارَ كالمُتَوَاتِرِ (٩) الذي لا يَتَطَرَّقُ إليهِ شكٌّ مع كَثْرَةِ رُوَاتِه، وصحَّةِ سَنَدِه، وعَمِلَ به الصحابَةُ والتَّابعونَ، وأنْكرُوا على مَن لم يعملْ به. قال الحسنُ: رأيْتُ أصْحابَ النَّبِيِّ -صلى اللَّه عليه وسلم- يَرْفَعُونَ أيْدِيَهُم إذا كَبَّرُوا، وإذا ركعُوا، وإذا رَفَعُوا رُءُوسَهم كأنها المَرَاوِحُ. قال أحمدُ، وقد سُئِلَ عن الرَّفْعِ فقال (١٠): إى لَعَمْرِى. ومَن يَشُكُّ في هذا! كان ابنُ عمرَ إذا رَأَى مَن لا يَرْفَعُ، حَصَبَه (١١) وأَمَرَه أنْ يَرْفَعَ. فأمَّا حَدِيثَاهم فضَعِيفَان.
