and al-Tirmidhi. Al-Khattabi said: This is more authentic than the hadith of Abu Hurayrah. It has been narrated from Sa'd who said: We used to place our hands before our knees, then we were commanded to place our knees before our hands. This indicates the abrogation of what preceded it. Al-Athram also recorded the hadith of Abu Hurayrah: "When one of you prostrates, let him begin with his knees before his hands, and let him not kneel like the kneeling of a stallion."
Section: Prostration upon all these limbs is obligatory, except for the nose, for there is a difference of opinion regarding it which we will mention, Allah willing. This was also the view of Tawus, al-Shafi'i in one of his two opinions, and Ishaq. Malik, Abu Hanifah, and al-Shafi'i in the other opinion said: Prostration on anything other than the forehead is not obligatory, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): "My face has prostrated." This indicates that the prostration is upon the face. Furthermore, the one who prostrates on his face is called a prostrator (sajid), whereas placing other parts upon the ground does not make one a prostrator; thus, the command for prostration refers to that which is named as prostration to the exclusion of others. Moreover, if prostration were obligatory on these limbs, it would have been obligatory to uncover them as is the case with the forehead. Al-Amidi mentioned this as a narration from Ahmad, and al-Qadi mentioned in "al-Jami'": This is the apparent view of Ahmad's words, for he has stated regarding a sick person who raises something to prostrate upon that it suffices him, and it is known that he has omitted prostration upon his hands. Our argument is what was narrated by Ibn Abbas, who said:
