Al-Mughni by Ibn Qudama - Edited by Al-Turki
Volume 2 · Page 205166 - Issue: He said: (When he sits and attains an upright position, he should sit on his left leg and keep his right leg upright.)

Translation · EN

from prostration, he would not prostrate until he was sitting upright. [Narrated by Muslim] (2). Because this is an obligatory act of rising, sitting straight after it is also obligatory, just like rising from the final prostration. It is not accepted from them that the sitting for the tashahhud is not obligatory.

166 - Issue; He said: (When he sits and straightens up, he should sit on his left leg, and keep his right leg upright) (1).

The Sunnah is for one to sit between the two prostrations by performing iftirash, which is to bend the left leg, spread it out, and sit upon it, while keeping the right leg upright and extending it from beneath him, placing the balls of the toes on the ground and supporting himself upon them, so that the tips of the toes are directed toward the Qiblah. Abu Humayd (2) said, describing the prayer of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): Then he bent his left leg and sat upon it, then he sat straight until every bone returned to its place, then he lowered himself into prostration. In the hadith of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) which 'A'ishah narrated: He would spread his left leg and keep his right one upright. [Narrated by Muslim] (4).

It is recommended to spread the toes of his right foot so that they face the Qiblah, [and the meaning of this is that he should bend them toward the Qiblah] (5). Al-Athram said: I observed Abu 'Abd Allah, and I saw him spreading the toes of his right foot, facing them toward the Qiblah. He narrated with his chain of authority from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Yazid, who said: We were taught that when we sit in prayer, each of us should perform iftirash with his left foot and keep his right foot upright on the ball of the foot, and if the big toe of one of us was bent, he would insert his hand until he straightened it. From Ibn 'Umar, he said: It is part of the Sunnah of prayer to keep the right foot upright,
