-peace be upon him-, when he finished his prayer, would seek forgiveness three times and say: "O Allah, You are As-Salam (the Source of Peace), and from You is peace. Blessed are You, O Possessor of Majesty and Honor." Al-Awza‘i said: He should say: "I seek forgiveness from Allah, I seek forgiveness from Allah." Narrated by Muslim (85). Abu Hurayrah said: The poor came to the Messenger of Allah -peace be upon him- and said: "The wealthy have surpassed us in the high ranks and lasting bliss. They pray as we pray, and they fast as we fast, and they have the advantage of wealth (86) with which they perform Hajj and ‘Umrah and give charity?" He said: "Shall I not tell you of something by which, if you take hold of it, you will catch up with those who have surpassed you, and no one will catch up with you after you, and you will be the best among those you are living with, unless someone does the same? You should glorify Allah (subhanAllah), praise Allah (alhamdulillah), and magnify Allah (Allahu Akbar) thirty-three times after every prayer." We then differed among ourselves; some of us said: We should say subhanAllah thirty-three times, alhamdulillah thirty-three times, and Allahu Akbar thirty-four times. I returned to him, and he said: "He should say: SubhanAllah, alhamdulillah, and Allahu Akbar, until the total of them all reaches thirty-three." Ahmad said (87), in the narration of Abu Dawud: He should say it like this and not interrupt it: "SubhanAllah, alhamdulillah, wa la ilaha illallah, wallahu Akbar." If he turns to other [formulas], it is permissible; because other [forms] have been narrated from the Prophet -peace be upon him-.
