al-Laythi, from Abu Hurayrah, that the Prophet -peace be upon him- finished a prayer (25) and said: "Did anyone of you recite with me?" A man said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah. He said: "Why do I contest the Qur'an?" He (26) said: So the people desisted from reciting with the Messenger of Allah -peace be upon him- in what he recited aloud [of the prayers] (27), when they heard that (28) from the Messenger of Allah -peace be upon him-. It was narrated by Malik in "al-Muwatta'", [and Abu Dawud, and al-Tirmidhi, and he said: A hasan (good) hadith]. It was also narrated by al-Daraqutni (30) with different wording, saying: The Messenger of Allah -peace be upon him- prayed a prayer, and when he finished it, he said: "Did anyone of you recite anything of the Qur'an with me (31)?" A man from the people said: I did, O Messenger of Allah. He said: "I say, why do I contest the Qur'an? When I recite silently, then recite, and when I recite aloud, then let no one recite with me." And because (33) it is a consensus; Ahmad said: We have not heard anyone among the people of Islam who says that if the Imam recites aloud, the prayer of the one behind him is not valid if he does not recite. He said: This is the Prophet -peace be upon him-, his companions, and the Successors (al-Tabi'un). This is Malik among the people of the Hijaz, this is al-Thawri among the people of Iraq, this is al-Awza'i among the people of the Levant, and this is al-Layth among the people of Egypt; they did not say to a man who prayed [behind the Imam], while his Imam recited and he himself did not: His prayer is void. And because it is a recitation that is not obligatory upon the one who joins late (al-masbuq), so it (35) does not...
