with the Fatiha of the Book and a surah, and in the last two [rak'ahs] with the Fatiha of the Book. This was narrated from Ibn Mas'ud, Abu al-Darda, Jabir, Abu Hurayrah, and Aisha. [Malik, the companions of reason (Ashab al-Ra'y), and one of the two opinions of al-Shafi'i held this view; he said in the other: one recites a surah with the Fatiha in the last two rak'ahs] (3), due to what the al-Sunabihi (4) narrated, saying: I prayed behind Abu Bakr al-Siddiq during Maghrib, and I drew close to him until my clothes nearly touched his clothes, and he recited in the last rak'ah the Umm al-Kitab and this verse: {Our Lord, let not our hearts deviate} (5). Our evidence is the hadith of Abu Qatadah (6), that the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) used to recite in the first two rak'ahs of the Zuhr with the Umm al-Kitab and two surahs, and in the last two rak'ahs with the Umm al-Kitab, and he would sometimes let us hear the verse (7). And Umar wrote to Shurayh: "Recite in the first two rak'ahs the Umm al-Kitab and a surah, and in the last two rak'ahs the Umm al-Kitab" (8). As for what al-Siddiq (may Allah have mercy on him) did, he intended by it supplication, not recitation. [And if he intended recitation by it, then following the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) would have been more appropriate, along with the fact that the statement of Umar and other Companions is contrary to it] (9).
(3) In M: "Narrated by Isma'il ibn Sa'id al-Shalanji from them with his isnad, except for the hadith of Jabir, which was narrated by Ahmad; this is the view of Malik and Abu Hanifah. Al-Shafi'i's opinion differed; at times he said the same, and at other times he said: One recites a surah with the Fatiha in every rak'ah, and this is also narrated from Ibn Umar." Regarding the hadith of Jabir, we say: It is Jabir ibn Samurah. See: al-Fath al-Rabbani 3/209, 210. (4) Abu Abd Allah Abd al-Rahman ibn Usaylah ibn Asal al-Sunabihi, he traveled to the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) but found that he had died five or six days prior. He was trustworthy, narrated few hadiths, and died between the age of seventy and eighty. Tahdhib al-Tahdhib 6/229, 230. (5) Surah Al Imran: 8. (6) Its takhrij (documentation) was presented on page 150. (7) Omitted from M. (8) In the original: "the Quran". (9) In M: "so that it would be in accordance with the action of the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) and the rest of his Companions. Even if it were assumed that he intended recitation by it, it would not necessitate abandoning the hadith and action of the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace). Furthermore, we have already mentioned the view of Umar and other Companions contrary to this."
