is required for the obligatory (fard) is required for the voluntary (nafl), such as purification. It is the text of Ahmad (22), in the narration of Hanbal, that it suffices for him to wrap himself with a single garment, without having any of it on his shoulder, during supererogatory (tatawwu') prayer; because the voluntary prayer (24) is built upon leniency. Therefore, one is granted concession [therein by omitting standing, and facing the qibla while walking, so one who omits standing is granted a concession] (25) for this amount. Abu Bakr argued for this based on the statement of the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace): "If the garment is narrow, then fasten it around your waist (26)." He said: This is regarding supererogatory prayer, while the hadith of Abu Hurayrah is regarding the obligatory prayer.
192 - Issue: He said: (And whoever has a single garment, some of it being on his shoulder, that suffices him)
[The entirety of this] (1) is that the discussion regarding clothing is in four sections: The first section is regarding what suffices [in prayer]. The second is regarding virtue. The third is regarding what is disliked. And the fourth is regarding what is forbidden.
As for the first [it suffices him of it that which covers his private parts, if there is something of clothing on his shoulder, whether it is from the garment with which he covered his private parts, or from other than it; because of what we mentioned, and] (3) because of what was narrated
