The second section concerns merit, which is praying in two garments or more, [for it is then more effective in concealment] (12). [As was narrated] (13) from Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "When Allah makes things abundant, then be abundant. Let a man gather his garments upon him. A man may pray in an izar (waist wrapper) and a rida' (outer cloak) (14), in an izar and a qamis (shirt), in an izar and a qaba' (outer garment), in trousers and a rida', in trousers and a qamis, in trousers and a qaba', or in a tubban (15) and a qamis (16)." Abu Dawud narrated (17) from Ibn (18) Umar who said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said—or he said: Umar said (18)—: "If one of you has two garments, let him pray in both of them. If he does not have but one garment, let him fasten it around his waist, and do not wrap yourselves like the Jews." [Al-Tamimi said: A single garment suffices, two are better, and four is most complete: a qamis, trousers, a turban, and an izar. Ibn Abd al-Barr narrated] (19) from Ibn (20) Umar: That he saw Nafi' praying in a single garment. He said: "Have you not obtained two garments?" I replied: "Yes." He said: "If you were sent to the house (21), would you go in a single garment?" I replied: "No." He said: "Is Allah more deserving that you adorn yourself (22) for Him, or are the people?" I replied: "Rather, Allah." The Qadi said: This is more emphasized for the Imam than for others, because he is in front of the followers, and their prayer is connected to his.
