the disbelievers, so do not wear them" (61). Abu Bakr narrated (62) with his chain of narration from 'Imran ibn al-Husayn that the Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "I do not ride on purple (63), and I do not wear saffron-dyed garments." As for tightening the waist in prayer, if it is with a belt, an izar (waist wrapper), a garment, or by tightening a qaba (tunic), then it is not disliked, according to a single report. Abu Talib said: I asked Ahmad about a man who prays while wearing a shirt and wrapping a handkerchief around it (64)? He said: Yes, Ibn 'Umar did that (65). But if it is with a string or a rope around or above his navel, is it disliked? There are two reports: One is that it is disliked, due to what it contains of resembling the People of the Book, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade resembling them and said: "Do not wrap yourselves in the manner of the Jews." Narrated by Abu Dawud (66). The other report, Ahmad said (67): There is no harm. Has it not been narrated from the Prophet (peace be upon him) that he (67) said: "None of you should pray unless he is wearing a waist-wrapper (muhtazim)" (68)? 'Ali (69) ibn Sa'id said: I asked Ahmad about the hadith of the Prophet (peace be upon him): "None of you should pray unless he is wearing a waist-wrapper." He said: It is as if it refers to tightening the waist. Al-Khallal narrated with his chain of narration from al-Sha'bi, who said: It used to be said: Tighten your waist in prayer even if with a hobble-rope (iqal).
