or a quarter of her stomach is uncovered, her prayer is not invalidated (7). Our evidence is what Umm Salamah narrated, saying: I said, "O Messenger of Allah, may a woman pray in a chemise (dir') and a head covering (khimar) without a lower garment (izar)?" He replied, "Yes, if it is long enough to cover the tops of her feet." It was narrated by Abu Dawud (8), who stated that a group attributed it solely to Umm Salamah. [And it was elevated by Abd al-Rahman ibn Abd Allah ibn Dinar] (10). Ibn Umar narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Allah will not look at one who drags his garment out of pride." Umm Salamah asked: "What should women do with their hems?" He replied: "They should let them down by a span." She said: "Then their feet will be uncovered." He said: "Then they should let it down by a cubit, and no more." Narrated by al-Tirmidhi (11), who said: A hasan sahih hadith. This indicates the obligation of covering the feet. Furthermore, it is a place for which uncovering is not obligatory in ihram, so it is not permitted to uncover it in prayer, like the shins. Moreover, the report narrated regarding the woman being an 'awrah is by consensus, for the scholars have unanimously agreed that a free woman must cover her head in prayer, and that if she prays while her entire head is uncovered, she must repeat the prayer. Estimating it by a quarter is an arbitrary assertion for which there is no evidence, and estimation is not permissible based on mere opinion or arbitrariness. The obligation of covering the head has been established by the statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): "Allah does not accept the prayer of a menstruating woman except with a head covering" (12). Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, who said: A hasan hadith. This contains an indication of the obligation to cover the stomach and other parts of the rest of the body.

Notes

(7) In the original, there is an addition after this: "because it covers". It has no place there. (8) In: The chapter 'How a woman prays', from the Book of Prayer. Sunan Abi Dawud 1/149. (9) Abu Dawud's phrasing: "They limited it to Umm Salamah," meaning they attributed it to her words, not the words of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). (10) This is not in Sunan Abi Dawud. This Abd al-Rahman is the freed slave of Ibn Umar, and there is weakness in his hadith. See his biography in: Tahdhib al-Tahdhib 6/206. (11) In: The chapter 'What has been narrated regarding women dragging their hems,' from the Books of Clothing. 'Aridat al-Ahwadhi 7/238, 239.
