Abu Hurayrah named it for us (5), but I forgot—so he prayed two rak'ahs, then performed the taslim. He then stood up to a piece of wood placed in the mosque and placed his hand upon it as if he were angry, [and he intertwined] (6) his fingers, placing his right hand upon the back of his left palm. The quick-witted people left the mosque, saying: "Has the prayer been shortened?" Among the people were Abu Bakr and 'Umar, but they feared speaking to him. Among the people was a man with long hands, called Dhu al-Yadayn. He said: "O Messenger of Allah, have you forgotten, or has the prayer been shortened?" He replied: "I have not forgotten, nor has it been shortened." He [the Prophet] then asked: "Is it as Dhu al-Yadayn says?" They replied: "Yes." He then stepped forward and prayed what he had omitted from his prayer, then performed the taslim, then performed takbir and prostrated [a prostration] like his [usual] prostration or longer, then raised his head and performed takbir, then performed takbir and prostrated like his [usual] prostration or longer, then raised his head and performed takbir. He said: "And perhaps they asked him: Then did he perform the taslim?" He said: "I have been informed that 'Imran ibn Husayn said: Then he performed the taslim." Agreed upon (7). Abu Dawud also recorded it and added: He said, "I said, what about the tashahhud?" He replied: "I did not hear about the tashahhud, but it is more beloved to me (8) that he should perform the tashahhud."
