of the correct order. The second situation: He omitted a pillar, either a prostration or a bowing, out of forgetfulness, then remembered it after beginning the recitation of the following rak'ah. The rak'ah in which he omitted the pillar (43) becomes invalid, and the one he began reciting in its place takes its place. Ahmad affirmed this in a report by the group (44). Al-Athram said: I asked Abu 'Abd Allah about a man who prayed one rak'ah, then stood up to pray another, but then remembered that he had only performed one prostration for the first rak'ah? He said: If he remembers at the very beginning of his standing before performing any action (45) for the next, he shall descend and prostrate, and it [the first rak'ah] shall count. But if he has performed an action (45) for the next, he shall cancel the first and treat this current one as the first. I asked: Should he begin with the opening supplication (istiftah) or does the first opening supplication (47) suffice? He said: He should not begin again, and the first one suffices him. I asked: What if he forgot two prostrations from two rak'ahs? He said: He does not count those (48) two rak'ahs, and the opening supplication remains valid. This is the opinion of Ishaq. Al-Shafi'i said: If he remembers the omitted pillar before the prostration in the second [rak'ah], he returns to the first prostration. If he remembers it after his prostration in the second, it counts (49) for the first; because the first rak'ah was correctly performed, and what he did in the second is a lapse of forgetfulness (50) that does not invalidate the first, just as if he had remembered before the recitation. Ahmad mentioned this opinion from al-Shafi'i and approved of it, saying: It is more plausible, meaning than the opinion of the companions of Abu Hanifah. However, he chose the opinion which al-Athram narrated from him. Malik said: If he omitted a prostration and remembered it before lifting his head from the bowing of the second [rak'ah], he performs it and counts the first rak'ah, but if he remembers it after lifting his head from the bowing of the second [rak'ah], he cancels the first.
