al-Mughaffal, who said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "Between every two adhans there is a prayer." He said it three times, then (44) added in the third time: "For whoever wishes." Both [versions] were recorded by Muslim (45). 'Uqbah said: We used to perform it during the time of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace). And from 'Abd Allah (46) al-Muzani, who said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "Pray before Maghrib two rak'ahs." He said: Then he said: "Pray before Maghrib two rak'ahs." He said: Then he said: "Pray before Maghrib two rak'ahs, for whoever wishes," for fear that people might adopt it as a Sunnah. Agreed upon (47).

Among them also are the two rak'ahs after the Witr; the evident meaning of Ahmad's statement is that it is not recommended to perform them, but if a person performs them, it is permissible. Al-Athram said: I heard Abu 'Abd Allah being asked about the two rak'ahs after the Witr, and it was said to him: "It has been narrated from the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) through various paths, so what is your opinion regarding them (48)?" He replied: "I hope that if a person performs them, it will not be considered a hardship for him, but he should do so while sitting, as the hadith states." I asked: "Do you perform them yourself?" He said: "No, I do not perform them." Abu al-Hasan al-Amidi counted them among the regular Sunnah prayers (al-sunan al-ratibah). The correct view is that they are not a Sunnah.

Sahih al-Bukhari 2/74, 389. Muslim did not extract it; rather, he extracted from 'Abd Allah ibn al-Mughaffal al-Muzani a similar hadith to the previous one, except that he said in the fourth [time]: "For whoever wishes." See: The chapter on between every two adhans there is a prayer, from the Book of the Traveler's Prayer 1/573. It was also extracted by Imam Ahmad in: al-Musnad 5/55. (48) In (M): "within them".
