among those whom You have guided, and pardon me among those whom You have pardoned, and take me into Your care among those whom You have taken into Your care, and bless for me what You have given, and protect me from the evil of what You have decreed; for indeed You decree and none can decree against You, and indeed he is not abased whom You have befriended, nor is he honored whom You have opposed. Blessed are You, our Lord, and Exalted." It was recorded by Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi (19), who said: This is a hasan (good) hadith, and we do not know anything from the Prophet (peace and blessings of God be upon him) regarding Qunut that is better than this. He may also recite what was narrated by Ali (may God be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of God be upon him) used to [recite it in his Witr] (20), which we have already mentioned (21). It is narrated from Umar (may God be pleased with him) that he performed Qunut in the Fajr prayer, saying: "In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. O God, we seek Your help, we seek Your guidance (22), we seek Your forgiveness, we believe in You, we rely upon You, we praise You with all good, we thank You (23), and we do not deny You. In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. O God, You alone we worship, to You we pray and prostrate, and to You we hasten and strive. We hope for Your mercy and fear Your punishment; for indeed, Your severe punishment is surely joined with the disbelievers. O God, punish the disbelievers among the People of the Scripture who obstruct [people] from Your path" (24). These are two surahs [found] in the mushaf (codex) of Ubayy ibn Ka'b.
