who is called Abu Muhammad, saying: "Witr is obligatory." He said: So I went to 'Ubadah ibn al-Samit and informed him, and 'Ubadah said: "Abu Muhammad has lied. I heard the Messenger of God (peace and blessings of God be upon him) say: 'Five prayers which God Almighty has prescribed upon the servants; whoever brings them forth, not losing any of them out of disregard for their right, has a covenant with God that He will enter him into Paradise, and whoever does not bring them forth has no covenant with God; if He wills, He will punish him, and if He wills, He will enter him into Paradise.'" Recorded by [Abu Dawud and Ahmad] (35). On the authority of 'Ali (may God be pleased with him): "Witr is not a binding necessity, nor is it like your prescribed prayers, but the Messenger of God (peace and blessings of God be upon him) did perform Witr." Then he said: "O people of the Quran, perform Witr, for God is One (Witr) and He loves the Witr." Recorded by Ahmad in al-Musnad (36). It has been established that when the Bedouin asked the Prophet (peace and blessings of God be upon him), "What has God obligated upon me in the day and the night?" he said: "Five prayers." He asked: "Is there any other than them upon me?" He said: "No, unless you perform a voluntary one." The Bedouin said: "By the One who sent you with the truth, I will not add to them, nor will I fall short of them." He said: "The man has succeeded if he is truthful" (37). And because it is permissible to perform it on a mount without necessity, it is not obligatory, like the [other] Sunan. Ibn 'Umar narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of God be upon him) used to perform Witr on his camel. Agreed upon (38). And he said: The Messenger of God (peace and blessings of God be upon him) would perform tasbih (prayer) on his mount.

يُدعَى أبا محمدٍ، يقولُ: إنَّ الوِتْرَ واجِبٌ. قال: فرُحْتُ إلى عُبَادَةَ بن الصَّامِتِ، فأخْبَرْتُه، فقال عُبَادَةُ: كَذَبَ أبو محمدٍ، سمعتُ رَسولَ اللهِ -صلى اللَّه عليه وسلم- يقول: "خَمْسُ صَلَوَاتٍ كَتَبَهُنَّ اللهُ تَعالى عَلَى الْعِبَادِ، فَمَنْ جَاءَ بِهِنَّ لَمْ يُضَيِّعْ مِنْهُنَّ شَيْئًا، اسْتِخْفَافًا بِحَقِّهِنَّ، كَانَ لَهُ عِنْدَ اللهِ عَهْدٌ أنْ يُدْخِلَهُ الجَنَّةَ، وَمَنْ لَمْ يَأْتِ بهِنَّ، فَلَيْسَ لَهُ عِنْدَ اللَّه عَهْدٌ، إنْ شَاءَ عَذَّبَهُ، وإنْ شَاءَ أَدْخَلَهُ الجَنَّةَ". رَوَاه [أبو دَاوُدَ وأحمدُ] (٣٥). وعن عليٍّ, رضي اللهُ عنه: إن الوِتْرَ ليس بحَتْمٍ، ولا كصَلَوَاتِكُم المَكْتُوبَة، ولكنَّ رسولَ اللَّه -صلى اللَّه عليه وسلم- أوْتَرَ. ثم قال: "يا أهْلَ القُرْآنِ أَوْتِرُوا، فَإنَّ اللهَ وِتْرٌ يُحِبُّ الوِتْرَ". رَوَاهُ أحمدُ، في "المسند" (٣٦). وقد ثَبَتَ أنَّ الأعْرَابِىَّ لمَّا سَأَلَ النبيَّ -صلى اللَّه عليه وسلم-: ما فرَضَ اللَّه عَلىَّ في اليَوْمِ واللَّيْلةِ؟ قال: "خَمْسُ صَلَوَاتٍ". قال: هل عَلَىَّ غَيْرُهُنَّ؟ قال: "لَا، إلَّا أنْ تَطَوَّعَ". فقال الأعْرَابِىُّ: والذي بَعَثَكَ بالحَقِّ لا أزِيدُ عَلَيْهِنَّ، ولا أَنْقُصُ مِنْهُنَّ. فقال: "أفْلَحَ الرَّجُلُ إنْ صَدَقَ" (٣٧). ولأنَّه يَجُوزُ فِعْلُه على الرَّاحِلَةِ مِن غيرِ ضَرُورَةٍ، فلم يكنْ واجِبا، كالسُّنَنِ، وقد رَوَى ابنُ عمرَ، أنَّ النَّبىَّ -صلى اللَّه عليه وسلم- كان يُوتِرُ على بَعِيرِه. مُتَّفَقٌ عليه (٣٨)، وقال: كان رسولُ اللهِ -صلى اللَّه عليه وسلم- يُسَبِّحُ على الرَّاحِلَةِ
