or performing the Tarawih in another congregation. According to Ahmad, there is no harm in it, because Anas ibn Malik said: 'They only return for goodness they hope for or for a harm they fear.' He did not view any harm in it. Muhammad ibn al-Hakam narrated from him the disapproval thereof, but that is an old opinion, and the practice is based on what the group (al-jama'ah) narrated. Abu Bakr said: If he delays [the prayer] to the middle of the night, or to its end, it is not disapproved, according to a single narration. The disagreement only pertains to when they return before sleep, and the correct view is that it is not disapproved; for it is goodness and obedience, so it is not disapproved, just as if he had delayed it to the end of the night.

Section: Regarding concluding the Quran: Al-Fadl ibn Ziyad said: I asked Abu Abd Allah, and I said: I am completing the Quran, should I place the conclusion in the Witr or the Tarawih? He said: Place it in the Tarawih, so that we may have a supplication between two (rak'ahs). I said: How should I proceed? He said: When you finish the end of the Quran, raise your hands before you bow, and supplicate with us while we are in prayer, and lengthen the standing. I said: With what should I supplicate? He said: With whatever you wish. He said: So I did as he commanded me, and he was behind me supplicating while standing, [and he raised his hands, and Hanbal said]: I heard Ahmad say regarding concluding the Quran: When you finish the recitation of 'Qul a'udhu bi-rabbi al-nas' (Surat al-Nas), raise your hands in supplication before bowing. I said: To what do you incline regarding this? He said: I saw the people of Makkah doing it, and Sufyan ibn Uyaynah used to do it with them in Makkah. Al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Azim said: And this is how I caught the people in Basra and in Makkah. The people of Madinah narrate something regarding this, and it was mentioned from Uthman ibn Affan.

Section: Our companions differed regarding the night prayer of the Day of Doubt (Yawm al-Shakk); it was narrated from the Qadi that he said:

يُصَلِّىَ التَرَاوِيحَ في جماعةٍ أُخْرَى. فعن أحمدَ: أنَّه لا بَأْسَ به؛ لأنَّ أنَسَ بنَ مالِكٍ قال: ما يَرْجِعُونَ إلَّا لِخَيْرٍ يَرْجُونَه، أو لِشَرٍّ يَحْذَرُونَهُ. وكان لا يَرَى به بَأْسًا. ونَقَلَ محمدُ بنُ الحَكَمِ عنه الكَرَاهَةَ، إلَّا أنَّه قَولٌ قَدِيمٌ، والعَمَلُ على ما رَوَاهُ الجَمَاعَةُ. وقال أبو بكرٍ: [إنْ أخَّرَ] (٢٧) الصَّلَاةَ إلى نِصْفِ اللَّيْلِ، أو إلى آخِرِه، لم تُكْرَهْ، رِوَايَةً وَاحِدَةً، وإنَّما الخِلَافُ فيما إذا رَجَعُوا قبلَ النَّوْمِ، والصَّحِيحُ أنَّه لا يُكْرَهُ؛ لأنَّه خَيْرٌ وطَاعَةٌ، فلم يُكْرَهُ، كما لو أَخَّرَهُ إلى آخِرِ اللَّيْلِ.

فصل: في خَتْمِ القُرْآنِ: قال الفَضْلُ بن زَيَادٍ: سَألْتُ أبا عبدِ اللهِ، فقلتُ: أخْتِمُ القُرْآنَ، أجْعَلُه في الوِتْرِ أو في التَّرَاوِيحِ؟ قال: اجْعَلْهُ في التَّرَاوِيحِ، حتى يكونَ لنا دُعَاءً بين اثْنَيْنِ. قلتُ: كيف أصْنَعُ؟ قال: إذا فَرَغْتَ من آخِرِ القُرْآنِ فارْفَعْ يَدَيْكَ قبل أن تَرْكَعَ، وادْعُ بنا ونَحْنُ في الصَّلَاةِ، وأطِل القِيَامَ. قلتُ: بِمَ أدْعُو؟ قال: بما شِئْتَ. قال: ففَعَلْتُ كما (٢٨) أمَرَنى، وهو خَلْفِى يَدْعُو قَائِمًا، [ورَفَع يَدَيْه، وقال] (٢٩) حَنْبَلٌ: سمعتُ أحمدَ يقولُ في خَتْمِ القُرْآنِ: إذا فَرَغْتَ من قِرَاءَةِ {قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ} فارْفَعْ يَدَيْكَ في الدُّعَاءِ قبلَ الرُّكُوعِ. قلتُ: إلى أىِّ شَىْءٍ تَذْهَبُ في هذا؟ قال: رأيْتُ أهْلَ مَكَّةَ يَفْعَلُونَه، وكان سُفْيَانُ بن عُيَيْنَةَ يَفْعَلُه معهم بِمكَّةَ. قال العَبَّاسُ بنُ عبدِ العَظِيمِ (٣٠): وكذلك أدْرَكْتُ (٣١) النَّاسَ بِالبَصْرَةِ وبِمكَّةَ. ويَرْوِى أهْلُ المَدِينَةِ في هذا شَيْئًا، وذُكِرَ عن عثمانَ بن عَفَّانَ.

فصل: واخْتَلَفَ أصْحَابُنَا في قِيَامِ لَيْلَةِ الشَّكِّ؛ فَحُكِىَ عن القاضي أنَّه قال:
