Al-Mughni by Ibn Qudama - Edited by Al-Turki

Translation · EN

Mahdhura before him. As for when he is present, he should not be preceded by the Adhan, for the Muezzins of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) were never preceded by anyone else in calling the Adhan.

Section: If two people contend over calling the Adhan, the one who is more perfect in the qualities considered for Adhan shall be given precedence. Thus, the one with the louder voice is given precedence, due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) to Abd Allah ibn Zayd: "Cast it upon Bilal, for he has a voice more resonant (anda) than yours." He also gave precedence to Abu Mahdhura because of his voice. Likewise, preference is given to the one who is more knowledgeable of the time, more strictly observant of it, and the one whom the neighbors prefer; for they know best whose voice reaches them and who is most chaste regarding his gaze. If they are equal in all respects, lots shall be drawn between them, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "If the people knew what was in the call (Adhan) and the first row, then found no other way but to draw lots for it, they would draw lots." This is agreed upon. When people contended over the Adhan on the day of al-Qadisiyyah, Sa'd drew lots between them.

Section: It is disliked to commit a grammatical error (lahn) in the Adhan, for it may change the meaning. For whoever says "Ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulu-llah" (I bear witness that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah) and vocalizes the lam in "rasuli" with a fatha (making it rasula), removes it from being a nominal sentence (khabar). He should not lengthen the word "Akbar," because that introduces an alif, making it the plural of "kabr," which is a drum. The letter ha should not be dropped from the name of Allah the Almighty, nor from the word "al-salah" (prayer), nor should the ha be dropped from "al-falah" (success); because of what Abu Hurayrah narrated: He said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Let not one who swallows (idgham) the ha lead the Adhan for you." We asked: "How should he say it?" He replied: "He should say: Ashhadu an la ilaha illa Allah, Ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulu Allah." Al-Daraqutni recorded it in al-Afrad. However, if one has a lisp that is not excessive, his Adhan is permissible, for it has been narrated that Bilal used to say "as-hadu," changing the sheen into a seen.
