It was said to him: "Is it a full day's journey?" He said: "No. It is four burud, [which is] sixteen farsakhs, and a two-day journey." Thus, the madhhab of Abu 'Abd Allah is that shortening is not permitted for less than sixteen farsakhs. The farsakh is three miles, so it becomes forty-eight miles. Al-Qadi said: "The mile is twelve thousand feet, and that is a two-day journey for a swift traveler." Ibn 'Abbas estimated it, saying: "From 'Usfan to Makkah, from al-Ta'if to Makkah, and from Jeddah to Makkah." The author of al-Masalik mentioned that from Damascus to al-Qatifah is twenty-four miles, from Damascus to al-Kiswah is twelve miles, and from al-Kiswah to Jasim is twenty-four miles. Based on this, the distance for shortening is two days for a swift traveler. This is the opinion of Ibn 'Abbas and Ibn 'Umar. Malik, al-Layth, al-Shafi'i, and Ishaq also held this view. Ibn al-Mundhir said: "It is established that Ibn 'Umar used to shorten [prayer] to a land he owned, which was thirty miles away." A similar account was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas, as he said: "He shortens [prayer] for a day's journey, but does not shorten for anything less." Al-Awza'i adopted this view and said: "The general body of scholars say it is a full day's journey, and this is what we adopt." It is narrated from Ibn Mas'ud that he shortens for a three-day journey. Al-Thawri and Abu Hanifah also held this view, based on the saying of the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace): "The traveler may wipe [over his leather socks] for three days and their nights." This implies that every traveler is entitled to this, and because the three days...
