at the Zawra'. Recorded by Al-Bukhari (2). As for his statement: "This is the adhan that forbids selling and makes proceeding [to the mosque] obligatory," this is because Allah the Almighty commanded proceeding [to the mosque] and forbade selling after the call, by His saying, may He be glorified: {When the call is made for the prayer on the day of Friday, then hasten to the remembrance of Allah and leave selling} (3). The call that existed during the era of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is the call [made] after the Imam sits on the pulpit; therefore, the ruling is attached to it, not to anything else, and there is no difference whether that is before the sun has passed the meridian or after it. The Judge [Al-Qadi] narrated a report from Ahmad that selling is forbidden upon the sun passing the meridian, even if the Imam does not sit on the pulpit. This is not correct because Allah the Almighty attached it to the call, not to the time. Furthermore, the objective of this is to catch the Friday prayer, which is achieved by what we mentioned rather than what he mentioned. Were the prohibition of selling attached to the time, it would not be specific to the meridian, for the time preceding it is also [part of the] time. As for the one whose house is far, and who cannot catch the Friday prayer by proceeding (4) at the time of the call, he must proceed at the time by which he will be able to catch the Friday prayer; because the Friday prayer is obligatory, and proceeding before the call is a necessity for catching it. Whatever a mandatory act cannot be completed without is itself mandatory, like drawing water from a well for ablution if one cannot manage otherwise, or holding onto a part of the night along with the day in fasting, and similar matters.
Section: The prohibition of selling and the obligation of proceeding are specific (5) to those addressed with the Friday prayer,
