the prayer. He should also say: "O Allah, make me one of the most sincere of those who turn to You, the nearest of those who seek a means to You, and the best of those who ask of You and desire You" (26). We have narrated from some of the Companions that he walked to the Friday prayer barefoot, and when asked about that, he said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: 'Whoever has his feet covered in dust for the sake of Allah, Allah will forbid them from the Fire'" (27).
Section: The Friday prayer and the effort to attend it are obligatory, regardless of whether the one establishing it is a Sunni or an innovator, upright or a sinner. Ahmad explicitly stated this. It is reported from Al-'Abbas ibn 'Abd al-'Azim that he asked Abu 'Abd Allah [Ahmad ibn Hanbal] about praying behind them—meaning the Mu'tazilah—on Friday. He said: "As for the Friday prayer, it is desirable to attend it. If the one leading the prayer among them is [known to be], he should repeat it [the prayer]; if he does not know that he is one of them, he should not repeat it." I said: "What if it is said that he follows their views?" He said: "Until he is certain." I know of no disagreement among the scholars regarding this, and the foundation for this is the generality of the saying of Allah the Almighty: "When the call is made for the prayer on the day of Jumu'ah, hasten to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade." And the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): "Whoever abandons it during my lifetime or after me, while having a just or unjust leader, out of contempt for it or denying it, may Allah not gather his unity (28)" (29). And the consensus of the Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, for 'Abd Allah ibn 'Umar and others among the companions of the Messenger of Allah
