two views. The first is what Al-Khiraqi mentioned, which is the hadith of Sahl. The second is the hadith of Ibn 'Umar, and it is the one held by Abu Hanifah. The third is the prayer of the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) at 'Usfan, while Khalid ibn al-Walid was over the polytheists. We prayed the Dhuhr prayer, and the polytheists said: "We have found an opportunity; if we had attacked them during the prayer [we would have defeated them]." So, the verse of shortening (the prayer) was revealed between the Dhuhr and the 'Asr prayers. When the time for 'Asr came, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) stood facing the Qibla, with the polytheists in front of him. A row stood behind the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), and another row stood behind that row. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) bowed, and they all bowed. Then he prostrated, and the row next to him prostrated, while the others remained standing to guard them. When he had performed the two prostrations with these and they stood up, the others who were behind them prostrated. Then the row that was next to him moved back to the place of the others, and the other row moved forward to the place of the first row. Then the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) bowed, and they all bowed. Then he prostrated, and the row next to him prostrated, while the others remained standing to guard them. When the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) and the row next to him sat, the others prostrated, then they all sat together, and he gave the salutation (taslim) to them. He prayed it at 'Usfan, and he prayed it on the day of Banu Sulaym. It was narrated by Abu Dawud. Jabir also narrated from the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) a similar meaning, which was recorded by Muslim. It was also narrated from Hudhayfah that he commanded Sa'id ibn al-'As in Tabaristan when he asked them: "Which of you witnessed the fear prayer with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace)?" Hudhayfah said: "I did." He then instructed him to perform a prayer similar to this and said: "And command your companions, if they are suddenly attacked, it becomes permissible for them to fight and speak." It was narrated by Al-Athram with his chain of transmission. If the first row guarded
