Chapter: The Prayer of Eclipse (al-Kusuf)

Al-Kusuf and al-Khusuf are one and the same thing, and both have been mentioned in the reports, and the Qur'an has come with the term al-Khusuf.

319 - Issue: Abu al-Qasim said: (And when the sun or moon is eclipsed, people hurry to prayer, in congregation if they prefer, or individually if they prefer.)

The prayer of the eclipse is established by the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), according to what we shall mention. We do not know of any disagreement among the people of knowledge regarding its legitimacy for the solar eclipse. Most scholars are of the opinion that it is legitimate for the lunar eclipse, and Ibn Abbas performed it. This was also the view of Ata, al-Hasan, al-Nakha'i, al-Shafi'i, and Ishaq. Malik said: There is no Sunnah for the lunar eclipse. Ibn Abd al-Barr narrated from him and from Abu Hanifah that they both said: People should pray for the lunar eclipse individually, two rak'ahs by two rak'ahs, and they should not pray in congregation because there is hardship in their going out for it. Our evidence is that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Indeed, the sun and the moon are two of the signs of Allah; they do not eclipse for the death or life of anyone. So when you see that, then pray." This is agreed upon. He commanded prayer for both of them with a single command. It is reported from Ibn Abbas that he prayed with the people of Basra during a lunar eclipse for two rak'ahs and said: I only
