and two recitations, two bowings, and two prostrations. He recites aloud, whether it is night or day. This estimation of the recitation is not reported from Ahmad, but it has been reported from him that the first is longer than the second. The estimation was mentioned in the hadith of Ibn Abbas, that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stood for a long standing, similar to [the length of] Surah al-Baqarah. It is agreed upon. In a hadith of Aisha: "I estimated the recitation of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and I saw that he recited in the first rak'ah Surah al-Baqarah, and in the second Surah Ali Imran." Malik and al-Shafi'i held this view, except that they said: He does not lengthen the prostration, as narrated by Ibn al-Mundhir from them, because that was not reported. They said: He does not recite aloud in the solar eclipse, but he does recite aloud in the lunar eclipse. Abu Hanifah agreed with them, based on the statement of Aisha: "I estimated the recitation of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)." If he had recited aloud, she would not have needed to conjecture and estimate. Likewise, Ibn Abbas said: "He stood for a long standing, similar to Surah al-Baqarah." Samurah narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) prayed during a solar eclipse, and I did not hear any voice from him. Al-Tirmidhi said: This is a hasan sahih hadith. [This is also] because it is a daytime prayer, so he does not recite aloud in it, like the Dhuhr prayer. Abu Hanifah said: He prays two rak'ahs like the voluntary prayer (tatawwu'), because of what al-Nu'man ibn Bashir reported, saying: The sun eclipsed during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), so he went out and began praying two rak'ahs and performing the taslim, and praying two rak'ahs and performing the taslim, until the sun became clear.
