Section: It is recommended to stand in the first part of the rain and expose one’s garment so that the rain may strike it, for it is narrated from Anas that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not descend from his minbar until we saw the rain running down his (6) beard. Recorded by al-Bukhari (7). From Ibn 'Abbas, that when the sky rained, he would say to his servant: "Bring out my garment and my bedding so that the rain may strike it" (8). It is recommended to perform wudu' with rainwater if a torrent flows, for it is narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that whenever a torrent flowed, he would say (9): "Come with us to this which Allah has made a purifier, so that we may purify ourselves" (10).
Section: It is recommended that they seek rain (istisqa') following their prayers, and on Friday, the Imam should supplicate on the minbar, and the people should say 'Amin.' The Qadi said: Istisqa' is of three types; the most complete of which is going out and performing the prayer as we have described. Next to that is the Imam's seeking of rain on the day of Jumu'ah on the minbar, for it is narrated that a man entered the mosque on a Friday while the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was delivering the sermon. He stood facing the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, the wealth has perished, and the paths are cut off, so call upon Allah to give us rain." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) raised his hands and said: "O Allah, give us rain; O Allah, give us rain; [O Allah, give us rain] (11)." Anas said: "And by Allah, there was no cloud or qaza'ah (12) (small patch of cloud) or anything to be seen in the sky, and there was nothing between us and Mount Sal' (14) by way of any house or dwelling. Then a cloud like a shield rose from behind it, and when it reached the middle of the sky, it spread out and then rained. By Allah, we did not see the sun for six [days]." Then a man entered through that same door on the following Friday while the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was delivering the sermon. He stood facing him and said: "O Messenger of Allah, the livestock have perished and the paths are cut off, so call upon Allah to hold it back from us." He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) raised his hands and said: "O Allah, around us and not upon us; O Allah, upon the hills (15), the elevated mounds, the depths of the valleys, and the places where trees grow." He said: It then ceased, and we walked out in the sun. Agreed upon (16). The third is to supplicate to Allah the Exalted following their prayers and in their private moments.
