Al-Mughni by Ibn Qudama - Edited by Al-Turki
Volume 3 · Page 390349 - Issue: He said: (If his family wishes to see him, they shall not be prevented)

Translation · EN

and one is safe from a similar occurrence a second time due to their precautions, such as tying [the body], securing the jaw, and the like. This was narrated by Ishaq ibn Mansur from Ahmad. al-Khallal said: 'The companions of Abu Abd Allah differed from him, for all of them narrated from him: He is not returned for washing under any circumstances.' He said: 'The practice is based on what they agreed upon (4) due to the hardship we have mentioned regarding it.' It is possible that the two narrations (5) are to be interpreted as applying to two different states; the instance where he said the washing is not repeated is when [the exit] is slight and goes unnoticed by those carrying the body, and the instance where he ordered its repetition is when it appears to them and is significant.

349 - Issue: He said: '(And if his family likes to see him, they are not forbidden.)'

This is because it was narrated from Jabir, who said: 'When my father was killed, I began to uncover the cloth from his face and cry, and the Prophet did not forbid me (1).' Aisha said: 'I saw the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) kissing Uthman ibn Maz'un while he was dead, until I saw tears flowing (2).' She also said: 'Abu Bakr came forward and approached the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) while he was covered with a garment of Hibara cloth. He uncovered his face, then leaned over him and kissed him, then wept. He said: "May my father be a ransom for you, O Prophet of Allah! Allah will not combine two deaths upon you (3)."' These are authentic hadiths.
