350 - Issue: He said: '(And the woman is shrouded in five garments: a chemise (qamis), a waist wrapper (mi'zar), a wrapping sheet (lifafah), a head covering (miqna'ah), and a fifth [garment] with which her thighs are tied.)'
Ibn al-Mundhir said: 'Most of those whom we have memorized from the people of knowledge are of the opinion that the woman should be shrouded in five garments.' This is only recommended because the woman, in her lifetime, exceeds the man in covering, as her 'awra (intimate area) is more extensive than his; thus, [it is the same] after death. Since she wears stitched garments during her Ihram—which is the most complete state of life—it was recommended that she be clothed in such [garments] after her death. The man is the opposite, so they differ in clothing after death, just as they differed during life. They are equal, however, in washing after death, just as they were equal in it during life. Abu Dawud (1) narrated, with his chain of transmission, from Layla bint Qanif al-Thaqafiyya, who said: 'I was among those who washed Umm Kulthum, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), upon her death. The first thing the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) gave us was the loincloth (haqw), then the chemise (dir'), then the head cover (khimar), then the sheet (milhafa) (2), and after that, she was wrapped in the final garment.' She said: 'And the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) was at the door with her shroud, handing them to us, one garment after another.' However, al-Khiraqi only mentioned one wrapping sheet. According to this, the cloth is first tied around her thighs, then she is wrapped in the waist wrapper, then the chemise is put on her, then she is covered with the head covering, and then she is wrapped in a single wrapping sheet. Ahmad alluded to this, saying: 'She is covered with a head covering, and a length of a forearm is left to be draped over her face, and the loincloth is draped over her thighs.' He was asked about the loincloth, and he said: 'It is the waist wrapper (izar).' It was asked: 'And the fifth [garment]?' He said: 'A cloth that is tied around her thighs.' He was asked: 'The woman's chemise?' He said: 'It is stitched.' It was asked: 'Is it hemmed and buttoned?' He said: 'It is hemmed, but not buttoned over her.' That which most of our companions and others hold is that the five garments are a waist wrapper, a chemise, a head covering, and two wrapping sheets; and this is the correct view, due to the hadith of Layla which we mentioned, and what Umm 'Atiyya narrated, that the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) handed her a waist wrapper, a chemise, a head covering, and two garments (4).
